Infertility Trials: A viable option

Infertility trials can be a fantastic way to get the latest treatment or medication at lower than the usual rates. As with any trials there are risks involved, so ensure that you do your research beforehand!

You can check on the web for groups (like the Center for Human Reproduction) who need participants.

  • To begin with you’ll have to qualify for the trials. For instance they may be looking for Russian women married to Venezuelen men skinnier than themselves, who live in Australia and breed Burmese cats. Ensure who is allowed to participate before you get going on filling out forms and getting your hopes up! Also make sure with your doctor before you apply.
  • Make sure that you are aware of what the trial aims to find out. Some studies test treatments, which might help you while others are simply trying to gather information in which case you won’t gain directly from the research.
  • What research processes are they using? You may be given a placebo in which case you might not benefit at all. They need to do that because sometimes patients get better just because they assume the pills will help, so you are required to use placebos (dummy pills) to confirm that it is the medication helping.
  • Discuss cash outlay before committing to anything. Some studies are completely funded so you could not be required to pay anything more than your transport expenses to and from the clinic. Every study is different, so verify costs prior to getting involved.
  • What are the potential risks? Confirm that you know exactly what the risks are and discuss them with your partner. You have no guarantee that the treatments will work – they might, but then again, they might not. You’ll have to choose.

Being able to access of the newest technology, which may offer alternatives that weren’t available previously, and helping other couples battling with infertility seems like a win-win situation. Do your homework, make your decision, and go with it!
