When you first bring home your new baby there are only a certain few things that they will be needing. They will need a place to sleep, something to bathe in, and some clothes to wear. These are the basic things that you need to think about at the beginning. During this time, the main consideration you will have is for your child’s safely.
Firstly, you will need to get a crib that is functional and practical. Make sure that is comes with a fitted mattress that snugly slots which is nice and thin and soft and covered in a cotton sheet. The crib should have slats that are no more than a few centre-metres apart so that your baby cannot get its head stuck between them. This will be more of a problem when your child gets older and becomes more mobile.
You must make sure that there is no pillow or any sort of cushions as these can prevent the air from circulating properly which can lead to the baby over-heating which can prove fatal. For coverings, use cotton blankets and make sure that they do not have any loose threads hanging off as these can prove to be a choking hazard, particularly as the child get older.
Ensure also that when you put your baby to sleep, you put them on their back. Have something like a summer baby monitor there which will allow you to both hear and see what your baby is doing when you are not with them.
You should look to clothe your baby in clothes that provide comfort and safety only. Do not consider anything fashionable unless it also manages to fulfill all of the desired requirements. You should look to get clothing that is made of something like cotton and is machine washable. Cotton is nice against your child’s skin unlike synthetic and woollen materials.
During bath time, you can quite easily start off by washing your child in the sink, but many parents will not want to do this. Instead look to get some sort of baby bath that is attachable to the main tub. A good option is a spa baby as these allow the child to relax and sit upright and it reduces the possibility of drowning.
Make sure that you have some baby bath towels at hand for drying the baby, choosing soft fabrics that will be nice against their skin. You will also want to get a car seat for the car for when you travel.
